Linen
The St. Martha’s Guild offers two weights of linen:
Our mid-weight linen—the same linen that the late Elizabeth Morgan offered through her website, churchlinens.com—is an absolute dream to work with and suitable for altar linens, altar cloths, amices, albs, and almost all liturgical needs. The Belgian climate is ideal for the production of optimal flax fibers, and in this particular weave, results in a smooth, bright, high thread count linen that is perfect for church use. At 4.6 oz. and 116 threads per inch, this linen is stable and strong, yet beautifully smooth, bringing both high-end elegance, and proper rubrics to your altar linens.
You can find less expensive linen online, but watch for thread counts. All of the sources I’ve seen (when they admit it) are around around 36-50 threads per inch compared to our 116. The same weight linen will have thicker threads with a lot of air between them. Sometimes budget is a big consideration, just be aware that this will be the difference.
Our heavy-weight linen provides a luxurious padding as the bottom altar cloth. It does have a slight winter-white cast to it, when compared to our optic white premium linen. This heavy-weight linen is 14.7oz, and woven at 40 heavy threads per inch, woven to a dense width of 55".
